a. hodden grey n. Grey hodden, made without dyeing, ‘by mingling one black fleece with a dozen white ones’ ( Gloss. to Burns, Paterson, 1877). Applied to the ‘cloth worn by the peasantry, which has the natural colour of the wool’ (Jamieson). Hence often taken as the typical garb of homely rusticity.A poetic inversion of grey hodden, used for rhyme's sake by Ramsay in a well-known passage, whence also in Burns, which has thence become a stock phrase, the two words being often hyphenated, as if ‘hodden’ were a qualification of ‘grey’, or ‘hodden-grey’ were a colour.
