Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < Orkney Scots hoolan strong gale (see below), with alteration of the ending (see -y suffix6); or perhaps the same word as hooley n.Orkney Scots hoolan is < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic ýlun (Icelandic ýlan ), Faroese ýlan , all in sense ‘howling, wailing’ < the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic ýla to howl (ultimately of imitative origin; compare howl v.) + the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic -un, suffix forming nouns.
Originally Scottish.
