Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Middle English hōly , apparently of Norse origin: compare Old Norse hófligr moderate, hófliga with moderation, fitly, justly, < hóf measure, moderation, hove n.2; also, Old Norse hógligr adjective, easy, gentle, hógliga adverb, gently, calmly, meekly, fitly, < hóg- in combination easy, gentle, soft.
