Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hog n.1, deer n.
Etymology: < hog n.1 + deer n. In sense 2 after Malay babirusa, lit. ‘deer hog’ (see babirusa n.; compare also quot. 1784 at sense 1a, although this apparently denotes a different animal).

a. A small ungulate found in the forests of Sumatra, apparently a mouse deer or chevrotain (genus Tragulus). Obsolete.
