Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of hog n.1 + fennel n., although the first element has apparently sometimes been apprehended as plural. In β. forms < hog n.1 + fennel n. Compare hog n.1 Compounds 2e, and also sow-fennel n. at sow n.1 Compounds 2, dog fennel n.
Any of several plants having finely divided leaves like those of fennel; spec. (a) a plant of the genus Peucedanum (family Apiaceae ( Umbelliferae)), esp. sow-fennel, P. officinale; (b) stinking chamomile, Anthemis cotula (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)); also called dog-fennel.
