单词 hogs norton
释义

Hogs Nortonn.

Brit. /ˌhɒɡz ˈnɔːtn/, U.S. /ˌhɔɡz ˈnɔrtn/, /ˌhɑɡz ˈnɔrtn/
Forms:

α. 1500s Hogges Norton, 1600s– Hogs Norton, 1900s– Hog's Norton.

β. 1500s Hogge Norton.

Also as one word.
Origin: Apparently from proper names. Etymons: proper name Hogenartone, Hogesnorton, Hook Norton; proper name Hogge Norton, Norton-juxta-Twycross.
Etymology: Apparently either < Hogenartone, Hogenorthon, etc. (13th cent.), Hogesnorton (14th cent.), variants of the name of Hook Norton, a town in Oxfordshire, or < Hogge Norton (14th cent.), Hoggis Norton, Hogges Norton (16th cent.), variants of the name of a village, now Norton-juxta-Twycross, in Leicestershire. In the 17th cent. the expression was identified variously with the name of the Oxfordshire town or with that of the Leicestershire village. There is apparently no documentary support for the claim (found already in J. Ray Coll. Eng. Prov. ed. 2 (1678) 264) that the Leicestershire village (or the Oxfordshire town) once had an organist called Piggs. For some other suggestions see Notes & Queries (1923) 34.
Now rare.
A fictional town renowned for its uncultured and boorish inhabitants; often in (depreciative) phrases suggesting that someone is a native or inhabitant of this town. Also elaborated as Hog's Norton, where the pigs play on the organs and variants.
