Etymology: Originally a regional (Irish English) variant of whore n., now usually distinguished in form in the sense below.
Irish English colloquial (frequently derogatory).
An unpleasant or contemptible person (typically a man). Also in weakened sense as a mildly dismissive term, sometimes expressing affection or commiseration (often with modifying adjective, as old, poor, etc.). Cf. hooer n.With quot. 1947 cf. whore n. 3.Long hoor was a nickname supposedly given by Michael Collins (1890–1922) to Éamon De Valera (1882–1975), who was noted for his height. There is no contemporary evidence for this, but cf. quot. 1965. cute hoor n. a person who is regarded as shrewd or crafty; a cunning but somewhat likeable rogue: see cute adj. 1.
