Etymology: < homo- comb. form + erotic adj., after German homoerotisch ( F. Karsch-Haack Gleichgeschlechtliche Leben der Naturvölker (1911) 20: see note). Compare earlier homosexual adj.Quots. 1915 at sense A. and 1915 at sense B. are taken from an abstract of, and quot. 1916 at sense A. from a translation of, a paper by S. Ferenczi, read in 1911 and published in 1914 (in Internationale Zeitschrift für ärztliche Psychoanalyse 2 131–42); S. Ferenczi cites Karsch-Haack as his source for this and related words.

Of a person: having sexual or romantic attraction to, or engaging in sexual activity with, people of one's own sex; homosexual. Also (and now more commonly): relating to, involving, or characterized by same-sex attraction or sexual activity.Sometimes as a synonym of, but other times in explicit or implied contrast with, homosexual (see homosexual adj.), connoting latent attraction to one's own sex, rather than active homosexuality (cf. homophilic adj.).
