Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin astrobolismus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin astrobolismus (1541 or earlier) < medieval Greek ἀστροβολισμός (1576 in Latin context, or earlier) < Byzantine Greek ἀστροβολίζεσθαι to be sun-stricken (attested in a glossary; < ancient Greek ἄστρο- astro- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek βολίζειν to take soundings < βολίς missile, flash of lightning, in Byzantine Greek also sounding lead ( < ancient Greek βόλος throw, thing caught ( < an ablaut variant of the base of βάλλειν to throw: see ballista n.) + -ίς -id suffix2) + -ίζειν -ize suffix) + -ισμός -ism suffix.
Obsolete.
The (supposed) condition of being stricken or altered by the influence of a celestial object (cf. starstruck adj. 1); an instance of this.
