Etymology: < homo- comb. form + Greek -ταξια ( < τάξις) arrangement + -al suffix1.
Geology.
Applied to strata in different regions, having the same relative position with respect to those underlying and overlying them, but not necessarily contemporaneous: cf. homotaxis n.; also to the fossil remains (usually of similar character) found in such strata.
