Etymology: Compare German hakenwurm, modern Latin Uncinaria, < Latin uncīnus hook (both coined by J. A. Fröhlich 1789, in Naturforscher XXIV. 136).
Zoology.
A parasitic nematode worm of the family Ancylostomatidae, which infests man, other mammals, or birds, using hook-like organs to attach itself to the host's intestinal lining.
