Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: astro- comb. form, -meter comb. form2.
Etymology: < astro- comb. form + -meter comb. form2, originally after French astéréomètre (E.−S. Jeaurat 1779, in Mém. de math. et de physique: Hist. de l'Acad. Royale des Sci. 1779 (1782) 502, the paper referred to in the source cited in quot. 1783; 1771 as †astéromètre ). Compare French astromètre (1748), denoting various other instruments (in early use a heliometer (heliometer n. 1)).
Astronomy.
Any of various instruments for measuring parameters relating to celestial objects, esp. their apparent magnitude or apparent diameter.
