单词 honduras
释义

Hondurasn.

Brit. /hɒnˈdjʊərəs/, /hɒnˈdʒʊərəs/, U.S. /hɑnˈd(j)ʊrəs/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Honduras.
Etymology: < Honduras, the name of a Central American republic and of the nearby British Honduras (now Belize), ultimately < the plural of Spanish hondura , earlier fondura depth (13th cent.) < hondo , earlier fondo (13th cent.; ultimately < classical Latin profundus profound adj.) + -ura -ure suffix1.The original motivation for the name is uncertain. Although it is often taken to refer to (supposed) deep waters off the coast of Honduras, early cartographic evidence (from maps of c1519) seems instead to support the hypothesis that it referred originally (in singular form) to an anchorage; additionally, the place name may originally have shown one of the cognates of fondura in another Romance language. Compare W. V. Davidson Atlas de mapas históricos de Honduras (2006) 7–10.
In the names of plants occurring in Honduras or products obtained from them.
