Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: holy adj., hour n.
Etymology: < holy adj. + hour n.In sense 1 after French heure sainte (1731 or earlier); the practice was introduced by Marguerite-Marie Alacoque in Paray-le-Monial, France. In sense 2 with allusion to the religious motivation behind this requirement.
1. In the Roman Catholic Church: a devotional exercise or religious observance consisting of an hour of prayer or meditation in the presence of the consecrated Eucharist.
