Etymology: < humorist n. + -ic suffix. Compare French humoristique (1801 in an isolated attestation, and subsequently from 1853, in sense A. 1, 1847 in sense ‘of or relating to bodily humours’), Italian umoristico (1830 in sense A. 1), German humoristisch (1536 in sense ‘of or relating to bodily humours’, second half of the 18th cent. in sense A. 1). With the use as noun compare German Humoristikum humorist piece of writing (1843 as †Humoristicum).
