Forms: Also Middle English holvyr, hulfere, hulfwur, hulfuyr, 1500s hulfwar.
Etymology: In late Middle English hulfere, apparently the same as Old Norse hulfr, which is explained by Vigfusson as ‘dogwood’. The ulterior history of the word, and the question of its relation to holly or holm, are undetermined.
