Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: house n.1, fast adj.
Etymology: < house n.1 + fast adj.With sense 1 compare the following example, which appears to show use as a noun (with plural in -n), although the form of the word may be garbled (compare the variant readings):a1300–1400 (a1268) H. Bracton De Legibus et Consuetudinibus Angliae (1922) II. 351 In franco plegio esse debent omnes qui terram tenent et domum, qui dicuntur husfastene [v.rr. housfastenter, hussefesten], et etiam alii qui illis deserviunt, qui dicuntur folgheres. The word apparently became obsolete during the Middle English period and was re-formed in the 19th cent.
Now chiefly regional.
1. Of a person: owning or living in a house; that is a householder. Obsolete.
