Etymology: Old English hund, noun neuter = Old Saxon hund. Old High German hunt, Gothic (hund), plural hunda, the original Germanic word for 100 < pre-Germanic *kmtó-m, Sanskrit çatám, Greek (ἑ)κατόν, Latin centum, Old Welsh cant (modern cynt), Old Irish cét, Lithuanian šimtas, Old Church Slavonic sŭto, Russian sto. In Gothic this primary form is found only in the plural twa hunda, þrija hunda, etc., which is also its ordinary use in Old High German zwei hunt, drî hunt, though ein hunt occurs late. In Old English hund was common in the singular as well as the plural. In Middle English, hund appears to have become obsolete early in 13th cent.
