In sense 3 after Norwegian husmann and Danish husmand (Old Danish husman), in the same sense.In sense 5, N.E.D. (1899) indicates the stress as ˈHouseˌman. Attested earlier as a surname: John Houseman (1365), although it is unclear which sense this reflects.
