Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Haubitze.
Etymology: < German Haubitze (1670 or earlier; Middle High German haufnitz , haufenitz , (eastern) huffnitze , haufenicz ) < Old Czech haufnicě (Czech houfnice ) piece of artillery for firing shells (formerly ‘wooden slingshot, military catapult’), ultimately < Old Czech húf , hauf (Czech houf ) multitude, crowd, heap ( < Middle High German hūfe heap, troop: see heap n.), with allusion to the ability of this kind of machine to fire numerous missiles in a single shot. Compare obus n. and the Romance forms cited at that entry. Compare also howitzer n.Old Czech haufnicě appears to have been borrowed into German during the Hussite Wars (1419–1434).
