Etymology: Found c1600 (not in Shakespeare); origin uncertain. ? Connected with hoit v.Skinner's conjectured derivation < German and Dutch heide heath, Dutch heiden, in Kilian ‘heyden, homo agrestis et incultus’, is perhaps not impossible; but evidence is wanting.
