单词 arnoldist
释义

Arnoldistn.

/ˈɑːnəldɪst/
Forms: 1600s– Arnaldist, 1600s– Arnoldist.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Arnoldistae, Arnaldistae.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Arnoldistae (1545 or earlier), Arnaldistae, plural (12th cent.) < the name of Arnaldus of Brescia (see note) + classical Latin -istae , plural of -ista -ist suffix. In form Arnoldist remodelled after Arnold, the usual English form of Arnaldus's name.Arnaldus of Brescia ( c1090–1155) was an Italian canon regular. He called on the Church to renounce property ownership and participated in a failed uprising in Rome, and was eventually executed as a heretic. His views became influential among his followers and also among the Waldensians and Spirituals (see spiritual n. 2c), and Protestants consider him a precursor of the Reformation. Compare Old Occitan Arnaldiste (1400), Middle French, French Arnaldiste (late 14th cent.; in French also Arnaudiste). Compare the following earlier example of post-classical Latin Arnoldistae in an English context:1567 T. Stapleton Counterblast iii. xxiv. f. 317 Whiche errour he learned..of Arnoldus Brixiensis, of whome as I suppose, Arnoldistae, of whom we spake of, be called.
