Origin: A borrowing from Rwanda. Etymon: Rwanda -hutu.
Etymology: Apparently < Rwanda -hutu (in Abahutu, plural; Umuhutu, singular).The plural form Hutus is an English development; the plurals Abahutu and Bahutu are also sometimes found in English use. Compare Swahili Wahutu (with the plural class prefix wa-, cognate with Rwanda aba-); this is also occasionally reflected in European languages at an early date, e.g. German Wahutu (1894 or earlier) and English Wahutu; compare:1900 Pearson's Mag. Nov. 588 Society is divided into two classes, the Watusi and the Wahutu.
