α. Old English gewelegian, Old English gewelgian, Old English geweliggian, Old English geweolegian (chiefly non-West Saxon), Old English geweolgian (chiefly Mercian), late Old English geweligian, early Middle English ȝeweliȝæþ (3rd singular present), early Middle English iwellid (past participle).

β. early Middle English awælȝed (past participle).

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: y- prefix, English weligian.
Etymology: < y- prefix + Old English weligian to enrich < welig wealy adj.1In β. forms with phonological reduction of the first element (compare a- prefix2). In Old English, prefixed geweligian is significantly more frequent than the unprefixed verb; hence the early Middle English past participles are more likely to show reflexes of the prefixed verb.
Obsolete.
