单词 idioticon
释义

idioticonn.

Brit. /ˌɪdɪˈəʊtᵻk(ə)n/, U.S. /ˌɪdiˈoʊdəˌkɑn/, /ˌɪdiˈoʊdək(ə)n/
Inflections: Plural idiotica.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Idioticon.
Etymology: < German Idioticon (1789 or earlier in sense 2; now usually Idiotikon ) < post-classical Latin idioticon (from 1743 or earlier in work titles, as Idioticon Hamburgense (1743), Idioticon Osnabrugense (1756), Idioticon Prussicum (1759)) < ancient Greek ἰδιωτικόν , neuter singular of ἰδιωτικός (see idiotical adj.). Compare also Dutch idioticon (1778). Sense 1 apparently shows an isolated early borrowing, the extended meaning probably being attributable directly to Coleridge (see quot. c1813).In plural form idiotica after the German, Latin, and Greek plural forms.
