Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish abdest; Persian ābdast.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish abdest (Turkish abdest ) and (in later use) its etymon Persian ābdast < āb water (see abkari n.) + dast hand, forearm ( < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit hasta hand, forearm: see hathi n.).
Islam.
The ritual washing of parts of the body before prayer or handling the Qur'an; = wudu n. Also: the water used in this washing.
