Etymology: Said to be a contraction of hyperboloid or of hyperbolic paraboloid (in reference to the shape of the teeth on the wheel).

a. Applied to a kind of gear similar to a spiral bevel gear but having the pinion offset from the centre-line of the wheel, so that it can be used to connect shafts whose axes do not intersect; it is commonly employed in motor vehicles to transmit the power from the propeller shaft to the axle.
