C. Lawson in Bull. Dept. Geol. Univ. Calif. I. 30 The common characteristic of all facies of these eruptive rocks is the presence, as a phenocryst of a mineral which..has received but little attention... The most extended and satisfactory note that has yet appeared regarding it is by Prof. J. P. Iddings... For this reason and also in recognition of Professor Iddings' eminent services to the science of petrography, it is proposed to name the mineral iddingsite. 1900 H. E. Gregory in Bull. U.S. Geol. Surv. No. 165. 181 This alteration product appears somewhat like the iddingsite found in the Californian teschenite. 1961 Amer. Mineralogist 46 96 The optical homogeneity of many ‘iddingsites’ suggests that..there is some structural control over the alteration process. 1996 New Scientist 4 May 40/1 Both the calcite and the iddingsite must have formed on Mars rather than on Earth—these minerals are embedded deep inside the meteorites, where terrestrial water could not have penetrated.
