Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin abditorium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin abditorium hiding place (13th cent. in a British source), storeroom, chest (from 15th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin abdit- , past participial stem of abdere (see abdite adj.) + -ōrium -ory suffix1.
A safe repository for valuables; a hiding place (literal and figurative).
