单词 abdomen
释义

abdomenn.

Brit. /ˈabdəmən/, /abˈdəʊmən/, U.S. /ˈæbdəmən/
Inflections: Plural abdomina, abdomens.
Forms: 1500s labdomen, 1500s– abdomen.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French abdomen; Latin abdōmen.
Etymology: < Middle French abdomen (1537 in the source translated in quot. ?1541; French abdomen) and its etymon classical Latin abdōmen (in animals) fat underpart of the body, belly, (in humans) belly, paunch, abdominal wall, of unknown origin. Compare Spanish abdomen (a1560), Portuguese abdomen (1661; now usually abdome), Italian addome (1712; 1567 as abdomine). It has been suggested that classical Latin abdōmen derives from abdere to stow away, conceal, cover (see abdite adj.), but this may be just a popular etymology; it is more probable that it is borrowed from a non-Indo-European language. In form labdomen after the French form with prefixed definite article l' (compare quot. ?1541 at sense 1). In plural form abdomina after the Latin plural form. N.E.D. (1884) gives only the pronunciation (æ̆bdōu·mĕn) /æbˈdəʊmən/. Pronunciation with stress on the first syllable is recorded by the Cent. Dict. (1889) and D. Jones Eng. Pronouncing Dict. (1917) and subsequent dictionaries.
