Etymology: < ice n. + hockey n.2
A sport developed from field hockey, played on ice by two teams of skaters who attempt to score by propelling a puck (formerly also a ball) into a goal with sticks having elongated blades. Cf. shinny n.1 Additions.In North America the game is normally called simply hockey (see hockey n.2 1b).
