Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: hystero- comb. form2, -genic comb. form.
Etymology: < hystero- comb. form2 + -genic comb. form, after French hystérogène (1878 or earlier in this sense). Compare hysterogenous adj., hysterogeny n.
Medicine. Now historical.
Producing symptoms of the disorder hysteria. Cf. hysterogenous adj.Used chiefly with reference to areas on the body (‘points’ or ‘zones’) believed by the French neurologist J.-M. Charcot (1825–93) and his followers to produce seizures or other symptoms when stimulated.
