Etymology: In α. forms < ass n.1 + ear n.1 In β. forms < the genitive of ass n.1 + ear n.1 Compare Middle French oreille d'asne, French oreille d'âne (second half of the 14th cent.; 1611 in Cotgrave denoting the plant comfrey).
1. An ass's ear. Also: an adornment resembling the ear of an ass conventionally attached to the hood or cap of a fool (fool n.1 2a). Usually in plural. Also in extended use.
