Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: ideo- comb. form, plastic adj.
Etymology: < ideo- comb. form + plastic adj. (see sense 4 at that entry), after French idéoplastique ( ‘J. P. Philips’ Cours théorique et pratique de Braidisme (1860) v. 93). In spiritualistic use (e.g. in quots. 1961, 1990) after ideoplasm n.
Denoting those physiological or artistic processes which are supposed to be moulded or modified by mental impressions or suggestions. Also: relating to the suggestive function of the imagination.Somewhat specialized uses in spiritualistic writings are not clearly distinguishable from the more general definition. ‘J. P. Philips’ (see the etymology) is a pseudonym of Joseph-Pierre Durand de Gros (see quot. 1901).
