Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἰδιασμός.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek ἰδιασμός peculiarity < Hellenistic Greek ἰδιάζειν to be peculiar (already in ancient Greek in sense ‘to be alone, independent’; < ancient Greek ἴδιος peculiar: see idio- comb. form) + -μός, suffix forming nouns.
A peculiarity, especially a verbal one; a mannerism.
