Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Russian lexical item. Etymons: idio- comb. form, -gram comb. form.
Etymology: < idio- comb. form + -gram comb. form, after Russian idiogramma (attributed to S. Navašin in Žurnal′ Russkogo Botaničeskogo Obščestva (1921) 6 171, where he is said to have used the term in his lectures for many years).The spelling ideogram (attested from 1949 or earlier) apparently arises by confusion with ideogram n.; see also note at idio- comb. form.
Genetics.
A diagrammatic or systematized representation of the chromosome complement of an individual, species, or other group of organisms, indicating the number of chromosomes and their lengths, arm length ratio, centromere position, banding pattern, etc.; = karyotype n. 1b. Later also: a similar diagram of the structure of a single chromosome, indicating the position of bands, particular loci, etc.
