Etymology: < idio- comb. form + -lect comb. form, after dialect n.Apparently coined by Bernard Bloch (1907–65), U.S. linguist (see quot. 1948). On the variation in form see note at idio- comb. form.

The linguistic system of one person, differing in some details from that of all other speakers of the same dialect or language.
