Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin idiōmat- , idiōma ; Greek ἰδιώματ- , ἰδίωμα , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin idiōmat-, idiōma or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ἰδιώματ-, ἰδίωμα idiom n. + -ism suffix. Compare earlier idiom n. 3.
