Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch gebroeder , gebroedere , gebroeders , Old Saxon gibrōðar (Middle Low German gebrōder , gebrōdere ), Old High German gibruoder (Middle High German gebruoder , gebrüeder , German Gebrüder ), plural nouns < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Germanic base of brother n.The word shows a typical West Germanic formation in which the prefix denotes mutual relationship (compare discussion at y- prefix 2a). Like its attested Germanic parallels, the Old English word inflects as a strong masculine plural noun (occasional use as singular neuter is found exceptionally in modern German) and the prefixed word generally shows the same types of plural formation as attested for the unprefixed noun (compare brother n. Forms 2α. , 2β. , 2δ. and discussion at that entry).
Obsolete.
With plural agreement. Brothers (in various senses); brethren.
