Etymology: Cognate with Old High German gikunt nature < a prefixed form (see y- prefix) of the Germanic base of kind n. (see further discussion at that entry). Compare also Gothic gakunþs , of uncertain meaning. Compare kind n.In Old English originally a strong feminine (i-stem) gecynd, but also inflected as a strong neuter (a fluctuation in gender common with abstract nouns of this declension); the neuter plural in -u (also -o) is also subject to reinterpretation as an indeclinable feminine gecyndo, as well as giving rise to an analogical neuter singular form gecynde.
