单词 i-mind
释义

i-mindn.

Forms: Old English gemind, Old English gimynd (chiefly Northumbrian), Old English–early Middle English gemynd, late Old English gemynde, late Old English–early Middle English gemund, early Middle English ȝemiend (south-east midlands), early Middle English ȝemund, early Middle English ȝemynd, early Middle English imiend (south-east midlands), early Middle English imunde, early Middle English imynd, early Middle English ymvnde, Middle English imund (south-western and south-west midlands), Middle English ymund (south-western).
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with Old High German gimunt remembrance, Gothic gamunds memory, remembrance, reminder, and probably also (with regular loss of the prefix) Old Icelandic mynd image, model < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Indo-European base of a preterite-present verb for ‘to think, remember, intend’ (see below) + an Indo-European dental suffix forming nouns (compare -th suffix1 1 and -t suffix3 1). Compare (without the prefix) Middle High German munst love, joy (with analogical -s- ); also (outside Germanic) Sanskrit mati thought, intention, classical Latin ment- , mēns mind, Early Irish airmitiu consideration, reverence, Old Church Slavonic pamętĭ memory, recollection (Russian pamjat′ , compare Pamyat n.), Lithuanian mintis thought, reflection, and further (with a different dental suffix) ancient Greek -ματος that thinks (in αὐτόματος : see automaton n.). Compare later mind n.1The preterite-present verb. The underlying Indo-European base survives in the Old English preterite-present verb munan to think about, remember and its cognates (see mone v.; also, with prefix, gemunan : see i-mune v.), all reflecting the zero-grade, as does i-mind n. The present singular paradigm of this verb shows the o-grade (compare Old Icelandic man , first person singular: see maun v.1). Outside Germanic, compare (with o-grade) the first person singular present indicative forms ancient Greek μέμονα I have in mind, I yearn, and classical Latin meminī I remember, and (with zero-grade) the corresponding imperatives ancient Greek μεμάτω and classical Latin memento (compare memento n.). For other verbs of the preterite-present class in English compare e.g. can v.1, dare v.1, may v.1, mote v.1, owe v., and shall v. Further cognates with zero grade. With the zero grade of the same Indo-European base compare also Old English myne thought, and its cognates (see min n.1), Old Icelandic munu , future auxiliary (see mun v.); also (outside Germanic) ancient Greek μιμνήσκειν to remember (compare automnesia n.) and its derivative μνᾶσθαι , in the same sense (compare mnemonic n.), Tocharian A mnu action of thinking, Old Church Slavonic mĭněti to think, consider, Lithuanian minėti to mention, remember, minti to recall. Further cognates with e-grade. With the full grade of the same Indo-European base compare Old Icelandic minni memory, Old Swedish minne (Swedish minne ), Danish minde memory, memorial (compare min v.2), Gothic gaminþi remembrance, anaminds suspicion, supposition, also Old High German urminni (in urminni sīn to not think of). Compare (outside Germanic) Sanskrit man- to think, manas mind, Avestan man- to think, manah- mind, ancient Greek μένος rage, Early Irish muinithir to intend, think (also ad-muinethar to remember, commemorate, do-moinethar to suppose, expect), menma mind, thought, courage, Lithuanian menas art, skill (now archaic) memory. Further cognates with o-grade. With the o -grade of the same Indo-European base compare Old English manian , monian to admonish (also with prefix gemanian , gemonian ), Old Saxon manon , Old High German manon to admonish, and also (outside Germanic) Sanskrit mān- to honour, respect (causative of man- ), classical Latin monēre to remind, advise, warn (compare e.g. admonish v.). Grammatical variation in English. In Old English both a strong feminine and a strong neuter (gemynd); an apparently weak feminine by-form (gemynde) is very occasionally attested in late Old English.
