Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on Italian lexical items, or perhaps modelled on Spanish lexical items. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ignoramus n.; -o suffix.
Etymology: In early use, an alteration of ignoramus n., after Italian or Spanish nouns ending in -o. In later use probably a new formation, < ignoramus n. + -o suffix.Spanish ignoramos and Italian ignoramo are both verb forms, meaning ‘we do not know’.
Now rare.
An ignorant or stupid person; an ignoramus.
