Etymology: < classical Latin ignōtus (adjective) unknown, (noun) unknown person, stranger < in- in- prefix3 + gnōtus , nōtus known (see notify v.).Compare Middle French ignot (late 14th cent.), Spanish ignoto, adjective (late 14th cent.), Portuguese ignoto (15th cent.), all in the sense ‘unknown’, and also Italian ignoto (a1321 as adjective, a1535 as noun, with reference to unknown people; 1336 as noun in the sense ‘ignorant person’).
Obsolete.
