Etymology: < Arabic iḥrām ( < ḥarama to forbid: compare harem n.), a kind of dress used by the Arabs in Spain and Africa; ‘sacred state’ (Freytag).
1. The dress worn by Muslim pilgrims, consisting of two pieces of white cotton, the one girded round the waist, and the other thrown over the left shoulder.
