Etymology: late or medieval Latin īleum , for which classical Latin had only īlia (plural of īle or īlium , with a dative singular īliō ), in the sense (1) flanks, loins, (2) small guts, entrails. The form īleum (īleon , -os ) seems to have arisen from a confusion of this with īleus , Greek εἰλεός (see ileus n., iliac adj.¹ and n.), whence also its restricted sense.

Anatomy.

The third portion of the small intestine, succeeding the jejunum and opening into the cæcum.
