Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian arriccio.
Etymology: < Italian arriccio (1829) < arricciare to curl or bristle up (early 14th cent.) < ar- ar- prefix + riccio hedgehog (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 14th cent.; < classical Latin ēricius hedgehog (see hurcheon n.), with elision of the initial vowel). Compare earlier arricciato n.
Art.
In fresco painting: a layer of fairly coarse plaster applied to the wall and left rough so that the smooth top layer which forms the painting surface (see intonaco n.) may adhere to it more easily. Cf. scratch-coat n. at scratch n.1 Compounds 2.The preliminary composition sketch (see sinopia n. 2) is also executed on this layer of plaster.
