Etymology: < Anglo-Norman aryvage, Anglo-Norman and Middle French arivage, Middle French arrivage (French arrivage ) arrival (late 13th or early 14th cent. in Old French, originally with specific reference to an act of landing; 1260 in Old French in sense ‘landing fee’), landing place (1442; earlier currency of this sense is suggested by the post-classical Latin forms below) < ariver arrive v. + -age -age suffix. Compare earlier arrival n., arriving n.Compare post-classical Latin arribaticum landing dues (12th cent.), arripagium , arrivagium landing dues (from 13th cent. in British sources), quay, landing stage (14th cent.; < French). In sense 3 influenced semantically by arrive v.; compare later arrive v. 9b.
