Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: improvise v., -ator suffix.
Etymology: < improvise v. + -ator suffix, after French improvisateur improvisateur n. and its model Italian improvvisatore improvisatore n. Compare earlier improvisatore n. and later improvisate v.The form improvvisator reflects the usual Italian spelling improvvisatore. N.E.D. (1899) gives the pronunciation as (imprǫ·vizēitəɹ) /ɪmˈprɒvɪzeɪtə(r)/.
= improviser n.; esp. (in early use) an extempore poet (cf. improvisatore n.).
