Etymology: < Latin impius without reverence ( < im- , im- prefix2 + pius) + -ous suffix: compare Old French impieux, -euse (15–16th cent. in Godefroy); modern French has impie (in Cotgrave 1611), < Latin impius.
1. Not pious; without piety or reverence for God and his ordinances; presumptuously irreligious, wicked, or profane:
