单词 imbue
释义

imbuev.

Brit. /ɪmˈbjuː/, U.S. /ᵻmˈbju/
Forms: Also 1500s–1600s imbew.
Etymology: Found c1550; < Latin imbuĕre to wet, moisten, tinge, stain, imbrue, imbue. In earlier examples only in the past participle imbued, answering to the Latin past participle imbūtus, but probably influenced by the synonymous French imbu (found from 16th cent.), now treated as past participle of a verb imboire (refashioned from Old French emboire, past participle embeü, embehu, embu), but, as shown by the early forms imbut (1507 in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), imbuit (c1530 in Godefroy Compl.), probably, in its origin, < Latin imbūtus. There was also French imbuer, past participle imbué, in occasionally use 1560–1600.1755 S. Johnson Dict. Eng. Lang. Imbue,..this word, which seems wanted in our language, has been proposed by several writers, but not yet adopted by the rest.
